Quoted the news from CNN:

QUOTE
Tokyo (CNN) -- An 8.9-magnitude earthquake hit northern Japan on Friday, triggering tsunamis and sending a massive body of water filled with debris that included boats and houses inching toward highways.

The epicenter was 373 kilometers (231 miles) away from the capital, Tokyo, the United States Geological Survey said. But residents there felt the tremors.

The quake rattled buildings and toppled cars off bridges and into waters underneath. Waves of debris flowed like lava across farmland, pushing boats, houses and trailers toward highways.

In Tokyo, crowds gathered in the streets and tried to reach relatives via cell phone.

Scenes inside office buildings showed papers strewn all over the floor and people clinging onto seats and desks.

Such a large earthquake at such a shallow depth creates a lot of energy, said Shenza Chen of the U.S. Geological Survey.

It caused a power outage in about 4 million homes in Tokyo and surrounding areas.

A tsunami in the Pacific was moving closer to other shorelines in other countries, said CNN meteorologist Ivan Cabrera.

It triggered tsunami warnings for various countries, including Japan and Russia, the National Weather Service said.

"Earthquakes of this size are known to generate tsunamis potentially dangerous to coasts outside the source region," it said.

"Based on all available data a tsunami may have been generated by this earthquake that could be destructive on coastal areas even far from the epicenter."

The quake was the latest in a series in the region this week.

Early Thursday, an earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.3 struck off the coast of Honshu.

A day earlier, a 7.2-magnitude earthquake struck off of Honshu, the country's meteorological agency said.

i'm ok. still waiting til 11pm here for the all clear. at first it was slated for 7:30pm, but yeah, what a long pushback.

the footage on cnn was just... =( super sad. i had to check if my friend in japan is safe (fortunately she is).

a lot of the pacific rim will be affected too.. philippines, hawaii. wonder how all the others in those places are handling it or if they've had to evacuate.

lucky for me, i live far from the coast (15 mins by car, but hey, that's still far!).

my friends on facebook are banking on coral reefs to weaken the waves approaching guam.

We've had tsunami warnings over here on the west coast too. It's supposed to reach us around 8am. I'm pretty sure it will have petered out by then.

I wonder if Do As Infinity is okay? I sure hope so...

Van just tweeted that some japan train lines were back operated, so she supposed to be alright.

Yeah, we do have members from those countries. Hopefully they check in soon.

Tomiko posted that she is okay on her Twitter. She arrived safely home about 8 hours ago.

There was an explosion at a petrochemical plant in Sendai too. Looks like they're getting it the worst.

I've been following this for the last 10 hours
and I realized something

when there was that quake in Haiti in January I was like 'meh'
when there were those tsunamis in southeast Asia I was like 'meh'
when there was a quake in Chili I was like 'meh'
but when I turned on the news last night and saw that a disaster hit Japan I was like 'oh no! oh my god! ;__; '

I guess I only care about countries I like mellow.gif

This is devastating. I hope everyone's friends and families are going to be okay.

@ mavrick = i know exactly what u mean. i don't think those disasters made me apathetic to the issues. i felt sad and wished the people were okay. but i do feel a significant more amount of alarm when i heard japan got hit. It's just that i am so much more attuned to the culture that is japan.

I think we're more involved in this because of the massive amount of information being transmitted through the internet, which wasn't as much in previous occurrences. We have personal video footage, twitter posts, and all sorts of coverage.

If similar amounts of coverage and handcam videos of people screaming amidst tumbling walls were made available on the internet, I'd think we'd be just as concerned. Somehow, the video made it real for me.

I know Japan is a country that is so used to these natural disasters but somehow, it feels different this time. It seems it's much more devastating than previous natural distasters cause it's got a 8.9 earthquake + tsunami.

Could things get any worst?

There's a power plant right now that they are having trouble cooling and the U.S. military are flying over coolant just to keep it cool. It was already shut down when an earthquake was detected.

^11 reactors at 4 different plants aren't working, according to BBC. But the one you mentioned is the one they're most worried about.
