^Ian i don't think you are off to a bad start imo~

if you really want to get better at it i'll just offer a tidbit of advice..

first.. use a reference.

second.. designate a light source (even more so if you don't already have one from a reference)... the picture here has light flying all over the place, or so it would seem... so... find a focal point for it and think about how shadows on the body/cloths will form..

third.. do some anatomy sketches. no, i don't mean take a 3 year college course for it.. you can find all sorts of references on the internet. my best suggestion though, if you have 30 minutes to kill, go to the park. sit on a bench. draw random people. speed sketching forces you to capture a person in 5 minutes or less. this is why a park works amazing. you will have a lot of people walking past. are they slouched over? skipping along brazenly joking with friends? or are they brisking through the place like it's 45 below and sleeting?
some people will jog by, and you will have very little time to catch that motion. etc. etc. my personal fav is still people playing fetch with their dogs~~
